Harriet Sissy Grisham

Birmingham, Alabama — Our family celebrates the life of Harriet Lowber Grisham, known to all who love her as Sissy. Our Mom died at age 79 from Acute Leukemia on February 17, 2025, at her home in Birmingham, AL. She was born on July 28, 1945 to Harry Jennings Lowber and Rebecca Woods Lowber in Decatur, Alabama. Our Mom has always said she lived a charmed life. She enjoyed a carefree childhood filled with horseback riding, dance recitals, good friends, and all the adventures of small town life in Decatur. She later attended The University of Alabama before moving to Huntsville to work at Boeing during the space race years. It was there that she met our Dad, her prince charming, Chester Grisham. A few years later, our young family moved to Yazoo City, MS, where we lived for 30 years. After retirement, Mom and Dad moved to Lake Mohawk near Booneville, MS and lived there for 9 years. Wherever they called home our parents were known as a loving couple who served their church and community, making an impact by simply living their lives, doing what God called them to do. Our Mom was an amazing mother and grandmother and made all of our childhoods magical. We all hold wonderful memories of magic hotdogs bought with imaginary nickels, dances in the kitchen, tea parties, and nature walks, just to name a few. Her enduring optimism and joy for life was shared each day with her family, friends, and anyone that crossed her path. She was always the life of the party and never met a stranger. All her life, Mom had a servant's heart and a love for teaching, especially children. She taught ESL, tutored underprivileged children, led Bible Studies with Dad in our home, and served in more ways than we could ever list. After she lost her beloved Chester in 2011, she moved to Birmingham, AL, where she continued teaching, serving and sharing her faith. She was an active member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church and thrived in the last decade of her life. Sissy is survived by her children, Paul Grisham (Christy) of Coldwater, MS; Ashley Grisham of Birmingham, AL; three grandchildren: Rebekah, Anna Grace, and Daniel Grisham; and many loving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Harry (“Buddy”); her son, Craig; and her husband, Chester.
