Peggy Thornton

Peggy Louise Teague Thornton, age 89, of Hendersonville, TN, passed away on June 6, 2026. Peggy was born at home in Middleton, TN, on March 22, 1937. She was the middle child and grew up on a farm, where she was both a tomboy and very "girly." After high school, she moved to Memphis to work and later met her sweetheart, Johnny Thornton. They married in October 1957. Soon after, Johnny was drafted, and they spent two years living in Germany while he served in the Army. During that time, they traveled all over Europe, often with friends, and made some of the best memories of their lives. After returning to the States, they welcomed their daughter, Kristi Lynn, in 1960. Peggy worked several office jobs throughout her life, but more importantly, she was a very dedicated mother and a devoted wife to Johnny until his passing in 2015. She was also a loving daughter and took great care of both her parents when they became ill until they passed away. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved seeing them whenever she could. Pegged loved the Lord and was a lifelong member of the church of Christ. She and Johnny passed that wonderful opportunity and gift along to their daughter. She was a lot of fun and very feisty, earning their nickname "a live wire," which she took as a compliment. She wasn't afraid to tell you what she thought, so you always knew where you stood, whether you wanted to or not. She kept everyone on their toes and was tough and strong, making sure her daughter grew up the same way, which has served her well in life. We learned so much from her, even when it wasn't easy. Peggy loved bright colors, makeup, dresses, jewelry, and all things "girly." She loved yard work and being outside and wasn't afraid to work hard. She especially loved flowers. It wasn't unusual to see her barefoot in the yard - even in her 80s - carrying rocks, digging holes, or working with plants and trees. She truly had a gift for it. She adored her husband and struggled deeply after he passed. She longed to be with him again, and while we will miss her so much, we are thankful she is now at peace and no longer hurting. She certainly kept things lively, and the world will be much quieter without her - there will never be another Pegs. Love you, Mom. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny (John) Thornton; her parents, Arnold Samuel and Stevie Cooper Teague; her brother, Manuel Teague; her in-laws, Christopher Columbus Thornton Jr. and Vergie (Shannon) Thornton; her sons-in-law, Curt Greer and Tracy Harris; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, along with other extended family members. She is survived by her daughter, Kristi Thornton Greer Harris; her grandsons, Joshua (Rachel) Greer and Zachary (Maggie) Greer; and six great-grandchildren: Marley Greer, Willa Greer, Dawson Greer, Evie Greer, Leo Greer, and Isla Greer. She also leaves behind her sister, Joann Garner; her sister-in-law, Julia Milstead; and many wonderful nieces and nephews on both her side of the family and her late husband's side. A heartfelt thank you to the caring staff at The Carriages of Rivergate, as well as DeeDee, Micole, and Gentiva Hospice, for the love and care they showed her and for making her final days as peaceful as possible. They knew just how to handle that "live wire." She will be laid to rest at Tiplersville City Cemetery in Tiplersville, MS, alongside her husband, Johnny. A small private family graveside service will be held, officiated by Leslie Chapman of Hendersonville Church of Christ.
