Jerry David Alsup

On October 25, 2022, Jerry David Alsup, at age 89, left his earthly home in Chalybeate, Mississippi to go and settle in his Forever Home with his Heavenly Father. His wife, Nancy, said her farewells and promised to meet him There in due time. Jerry was born June 5, 1933, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Samuel David and Lottie Dean Potts Alsup. He attended elementary school at Tiplersville, Mississippi and Whitehaven school in Shelby County Tennessee. He graduated from Whitehaven High School where he participated in several sports and was President of the Honor Society. He then earned his BA from Memphis State University. He studied geology, was active in the drama department and the Baptist Student Union. Some years later, he completed work for his MA degree. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church, Three Forks, Mississippi. His life's work as an educator included teaching, coaching and serving as principal in both public and private schools. Other interests and vocations included professional baseball, teaching ballroom dancing, performing adagio, US Census Coordinator, Director of Nursing at a Memphis Medical Facility, and two years service in the US Army. He also was an avid genealogist having written a number of books on the Alsup family as well as others. As a result of his many years of family history research, he was a raconteur of the highest order, always having numberless tales from days of yore at the ready! Jerry is survived by his wife, Nancy Moore Alsup of Chalybeate; three sons: Donald Marvin Alsup(Debbie) of Piperton, Tennessee; David Christopher Alsup (Cathy) of Dallas, Texas; and Mitchell Porter Alsup (Leigh Anne) of Piperton, Tennessee; one brother: Dean Alsup of Jackson, MO; three sisters: Betty Jo Byrd of Hernando, MS; Esther Alvey of Foley, AL; Mickey Perhac of Elgin, OK; a near and dear cousin, Susan Alsup of Walnut, Mississippi: six grandchildren: Joy, David, Jon, Christian, Rebecca and Jordan; and five great grandchildren: Hope, Evie, Alice, Jamie and Saylor. His grandchildren will have unending memories of times spent with their larger-than-life "Poo-Pah" He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Lottie Alsup and two brothers, Donny and Marshall.
